“Shameful”: Politician rages because tourists litter Italian beach

The influx of visitors on the May Day weekend turned several beaches in Italy into garbage dumps. A politician expressed his anger on Facebook.
The 2025 summer season hasn't even really begun yet, and already several holiday regions are complaining about too many tourists. Sun and warm temperatures attracted many bathers to Italy's beaches on May 1st, transforming them into a garbage dump, as Francesco Emilio Borrelli, Italian representative of "Europa Verde," lamented on his Facebook account.
Borrelli calls the conditions on Naples ' completely littered beaches "undignified and shameful," and shows pictures. "This morning, Monache beach in Posillipo was still littered with garbage left behind after the attack last May Day. Cans, glass and plastic bottles, food scraps, plastic plates and glasses left on the beach by the uncivilized," he says.
Although the trash cans are just a few meters from the beach, there are still too many uncivilized people who prefer to leave their trash on the sand rather than throw it in the trash cans. Borrelli pitched in and collected the trash with some young people. "We found all sorts of things: underwear, socks, flip-flops, food scraps, and snacks. Rudeness must always be condemned; beaches must not be allowed to deteriorate in this way," Borrelli said.
Reactions to his action are mixed. While some celebrate Borrelli, others see it as "pure publicity." Still others argue that many of the items have been there for months. "You can see the sun-damaged bottles. You know they haven't been cleaned in a long time."
